Since we are only a few days into the new year, there is still time for you to start thinking about your goals. In 4-H, we strive to instill a very important life skill of goal setting, but not just any goal setting skill. We aim to teach our 4-H’ers about setting SMART goals. What are SMART goals exactly? SMART stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. For instance, an example of a SMART goal is to give a presentation about social media etiquette at the County Activity Day in May. This goal is specific. It’s measurable because the 4-H’er can measure if they actually did the presentation or not. It is also achievable and relevant. The 4-H’er also set a time frame. Now isn’t that easy? It’s your turn now to set some SMART goals.

A cool way to document or notate your goals is to create a vision board. A vision board is a tool used to help clarify, concentrate, and maintain focus on a specific life goal. In general, it is a board for you to display images or quotes that represent whatever you want to be, do or have in your life or specific time frame. I am a fan of vision boards and do one every year. They are great for both adults and youth to do. In a few weeks, I get to show a group of teenagers how to create a vision board tied to their 4-H projects and goals. I’m so excited!

If you are interested in getting a child between the ages of 5 to 19 years old involved with the 4-H program and to help them set and accomplish those SMART goals while making the best better. Or if you would like information on creating a vision board. You may contact the local 4-H office at 704.283.3735.

Thank you and have a great day!
