Alamance County 4-H team members Lane Whitfield, Aiden Kernodle, and Hope Andrews competed in the State Youth Cattle Working Contest on April 4, 2022 at the Upper Mountain Research Station in Laurel Springs, NC.  Team members had to work three head of cattle which consisted of low-stress handling, record-keeping, and processing (vaccinating and deworming).  The team also had to take a written test and identify breeds, feeds, and tools associated with the beef cattle industry.  All aspects of the contest are developed around Beef Quality Assurance guidelines and teaching youth the correct way (and safest way) to work cattle.

The state contest consisted of the top 8 eight teams from four regional contests that were recently held (top two teams from each regional contest).  Alamance County 4-H finished in 4th place with a team from Alexander County finishing in 1st place.  The top three teams were: 1- Alexander County Cattlemen's, 2- Alleghany County 1, and Alleghany County 2.
