The 2nd Annual Smithfield Dairy Show in Johnston County was held on Sunday, August 11, 2024. The show consisted of over 50 youth ages 5-18 showing dairy cattle from Alamance, Johnston, Warren and Franklin Counties. Alamance County had 13 youth compete in the show and 14 youth complete the 4-H Dairy Heifer Project.

The 4-H Dairy Heifer Project is an eight-week long project that started on June 10, 2024. Youth met twice a week and learned dairy cattle information (breeds, feeds, tools, anatomy, etc.) as well as how to show a heifer. There were six Jersey heifers on loan from Cherry Research Dairy Farm and one Jersey heifer on loan from Kimrey Farm for the project. Practices took place at Kimrey Farm in Mebane, NC. Most youth had never shown an animal or been around cattle before and this project gave them the opportunity to do both! During the project, youth would learn information in a classroom session and then work with their calves where they would learn how to brush, lead, clip, wash, and more as they cared for their calves and prepped them for the show. Lastly, part of the project requirement to be able to show was to turn in a project record book. A project record book is a record of what they have learned and done in the project.

Show Results

All of these youth did exceptionally well since this was their first time showing a dairy heifer (or even showing an animal at all). Alamance County 4-H entered three Cloverbud (ages 5-7) youth that showed non-competitively (due to age): Payton Langley, Eve Flack, and Henry Edwards. They all received a participation Cloverbud trophy. In the Junior (ages 8-10) Showmanship, we entered six youth: Gabriel Snyder, Emmie Davis, Mae Flach, Zane Edwards, Ayanna Harbison and Maddie Drane. Mae Flach and Maddie Drane were chosen to come back and compete for the Junior Showmanship Champion Drive out of the three Junior classes but did not place. In the Intermediate (ages 11-13) Showmanship, there were three youth entered from Alamance County 4-H: Ada Flach, Aedyn Snyder, and Jordyn Evans. Jordyn Evans was called back out of two classes for the Intermediate Showmanship Champion Drive and placed third overall! Lastly, we had one youth entered in the Senior Showmanship, Autumn Baldwin and she placed second overall! Youth that did not place in the top three were given a participant ribbon.

In addition to the showmanship classes, youth were able to compete in a costume contest for fun and we had two teams to win their classes: Payton Langley and Ayanna Harbison with their Jasmine and Aladdin costume and Maddie Drane and Ada Flack with their Chick-fil-A costume.

Congratulations to all of our youth, they did exceptionally well showing for the first time!
